A Sixth-Former at Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls has set up a pen pal initiative, pairing students with residents at local care homes.

Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Girls and The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School have been busy delivering bundles of new laptops and dongles with pre-loaded internet to other schools in the community this week.

The initiative has been created by both schools in a bid to support the rising numbers of families struggling to access learning at home, due to poor internet connectivity and lack of devices.

Ed Smith, a 12-year-old pupil at Monmouth School for Boys, has invented a device to help the NHS with the process of administering one of the Covid-19 vaccines. 

Ed, whose prototype can mix 100 vials at one time, was inspired by his GP parents, Peter and Sue Smith, who both work on the NHS frontline in Gloucestershire. The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation schools have moved incredibly quickly and efficiently to distribute 800 laptops and iPads to their disadvantaged pupils who have been learning remotely over lockdown.

The Christmas Camp at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools, for overseas students who could not travel home during the holidays, has been a huge success.

 

Although they couldn't spend time with their families, the boys and girls had a great time at the camp, run by Connexcel Ltd.
